On February 11, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The Day was declared by the United Nations in 2015, upon the initiative of HRH Princess Dr Nisreen El-Hashemite, Executive Director of R.A.S.I.T. (Royal Academy of Science International Trust) who championed full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.
The 9th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly took place on February 8-9 at UN’s Headquarters in New York and its main theme was: “Women and Girls in Science Leadership for Peace and Development” while its motto was ‘think of Science…think of Peace’.
Greece had the honor of co-sponsoring the event and took the opportunity to reaffirm its principled position that gender equality is essential to advance sustainable development, peace and security. Addressing the event, Greek Minister for Social Cohesion and Family Ms Sophia Zacharaki stressed that Greece is ready to implement its first-ever ‘National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security’. It is a strategy which will guide our steps until the end of this decade and become a strong deliverable for the country’s candidacy as an elected member at the UN Security Council for the period 2025-2026.
