The First session of the Preparatory Committee of the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS 4) is being held in UN Headquarters in New York, from January 22 to 26. Small Island Developing States are in the crossfires of multiple crises and therefore, the International Conference about to be held in May 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda, in the Caribbean, will be an opportunity to chart the course toward resilient prosperity for these small island states.
The Hellenic Republic supports the Small Island Developing States on the multifaceted challenges they face and recognises the need for action to tackle matters of sustainability at many levels. The Permanent Mission of Greece in the United Nations in Greece addressed the first session of the preparatory committee and elaborated on why SIDS 4 will be a milestone in the collective efforts for these countries to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Moreover, Greece has placed Maritime and Climate Change Security at the heart of its priorities as a candidate country for the UN Security Council for 2025/26, giving particular emphasis on securing that island countries, such as Greece as well, maintain a clean, safe and well preserved economic and natural environment.
To this end, in April 2024, Greece will be the proud host of the 9th Our Ocean Conference, which will address the pressing issues of maritime protection and security.
