International Day of UN Peacekeepers

May 29, 2024 | News and Media

Today is International Day of UN Peacekeepers! Observed annually on May 29th, the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers honors the establishment of the UN’s first peacekeeping mission, which was deployed in 1948.

‘Peace begins with me’ reads the motto of the United Nations and so it is. For 76 years now, more than two million uniformed and civilian personnel have helped countries to transition from war to peace. Today, more than 70,000 peacekeepers serve in 11 missions deployed in hotspots around the world.

Greece takes pride in its peacekeeping contribution through the Maritime Task Force of the ‘United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon’ (UNIFIL). It is the first United Nations Naval Task Force of its kind. Deployed since October 2006, the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force supports the Lebanese Navy in monitoring its territorial waters, securing the Lebanese coastline and preventing the unauthorized entry of arms or related materiel by sea into Lebanon.
