The United Nations Human Rights Council is holding its fifty-fifth session from February 26 to April 5, at the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Giorgos Gerapetritis addressed the Council’s Summit on February 28. Mr. Gerapetritis also held a brief meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, whom he assured of the Hellenic Republic’s continued support towards the institution.
In his address, the Greek Foreign Minister explained that Greece domestically follows a specific pattern when it comes to human rights policies. “We employ multi-facets strategic masterplans for the protection of vulnerable groups, based on the principles of non-discrimination and diversity”, the Minister stressed. Mr. Gerapetritis highlighted that Greece remains particularly sensitive about ongoing conflicts worldwide, particularly in Ukraine but also in other parts where the rights of women and children are substantially violated. Finally, the Minister shared his personal experience as a member of the academia and admitted that in his twenty-year old professional career as Professor of Constitutional Law, he had set as a personal objective the goal to convey to young people the need to respect universal and indivisible rights.
