The Hellenic Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations in New York celebrated Greece’s Independence Day by inviting all friends and partners of the Mission and team ‘Greece for UN Security Council’ to a special event around the statue of Poseidon at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Celebrating 203 years of Modern Greece, the Hellenic Mission’s event was an opportunity to commemorate the values of freedom and democracy while at the same time inform foreign dignitaries and colleagues about Greece’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council for the biennium 2025/26. Heartfelt thanks to all the attendees for joining us, as well as to Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly for honoring us with his presence.

Marking the commencement of the Greek people’s successful struggle against the Ottoman Empire (1821-1830), which culminated in the establishment of an independent state, Greece’s National Day is celebrated on March 25. The celebration has a religious connotation too. On March 25, Orthodox Christians observe the Feast of the Annunciation. So, happy birthday Greece, many happy returns of the day and let’s hope for more joyous news around the world!
