On December 3, the Security Council held an open briefing titled “Investing in the Transformative Power of Intergenerational Leadership on Women, Peace and Security” (WPS), under U.S. presidency.

Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo addressed the discussion stressing that the world needs to embrace new approaches in cultivating a generation of leaders which will be free from patriarchal norms and old power structures. The American presidency placed particular emphasis on advancing women leaders at the grassroots levels and highlighted that “intractable challenges to peace and security require both hard-earned wisdom and fresh perspectives; steady grounding and boundless energy; a keen understanding of the past, and unrelenting hope for the future.

Recognizing the centrality of women in the peacebuilding process, Greece attaches high priority to the “Women, Peace and Security” Agenda and therefore will support every effort that demonstrates what women can bring to the table.

Moreover, the Hellenic Republic, together with Denmark and Panama joined the Signatories of the Shared Commitments on “Women, Peace & Security”. Those member states adhering to the shared commitments on “WPS” undertake the responsibility to prioritize the Agenda and to ensure its implementation in concrete and tangible ways. The Signatories delivered their annual joint statement, during which, they called on Member States to promote women’s rights and their full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation in all phases and all levels of peace and security processes.
