This is an emergency- Supporting UN’s Emergency Fund

UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) enables humanitarian responders to deliver life-saving assistance whenever and wherever crises strike. Established in 2005, it is now one of the fastest and most effective ways to ensure that urgently needed humanitarian assistance reaches people caught up in crises.

Every year, the United Nations hold a Pledging Event. In this year’s pledge for 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the importance of supporting this mechanism because “year after year, CERF has proven its unique, effective and vital role”.

Indeed, in September 2024 alone, within hours of the surge in hostilities in Lebanon, CERF fast-tracked $10 million to meet the urgent needs of displaced families and those trapped in conflict zones. Moreover, so far in 2024, CERF, which is managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, has allocated more than $550 million to support millions of people who need rapid, life-saving assistance in 42 countries.

Addressing the pledging event, the Greek Mission highlighted the importance Greece attributes to the Fund’s humanitarian action and announced its financial contribution for 2025. Furthermore, Greece reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the Fund’s crucial role during its term as an elected member on the Security Council for 2025/26.
