President of the Hellenic Republic attends the UN Human Rights 75 High-Level Event in Geneva
Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Member States, civil society actors, experts and human rights defenders met in Geneva, Switzerland on 11 to 12 December to attend the “Human Rights 75 High-Level Event”, hosted by UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk. This High-Level Meeting aimed at stirring the dialogue around the future of Human Rights in relation to the digital era, peace and security, as well as environmental challenges and the economic development performance.
The Greek Delegation was headed by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Ms Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Giorgos Kotsiras. The President had the opportunity to meet with UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, as well as the President of the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Ms Mirjana Spoljaric Egger. During the High-Level event, Deputy Foreign Minister Kotsiras presented Greece’s national Human Rights pledges at the pledging tree session. In addition, the Permanent Delegation of Greece in Geneva was the proud co-sponsor of the side event “Human Rights 75- Youth Dialogue” which aimed at raising awareness on the Human Rights 75 initiative among young people.
Greece, a signatory party to all major international human rights instruments places particular emphasis on the subject. It is within this context that the Hellenic Delegation announced that the country will also apply for a three-year term on the United Nations Human Rights Council, for the 2028/30 term.
