Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ address to the UN Security Council high-level open debate on Ukraine
On September 20, the United Nations Security Council convened for a high-level open debate on Ukraine, in New York. Addressing the debate titled “Upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter through effective multilateralism: Maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine,” the Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stressed that “today, the entire United Nations system is being gravely challenged by the invasion of Russia in Ukraine. It constitutes a grave breach of the UN Charter and it remains a serious threat to European security, as well as to global peace and stability. Therefore, we are calling upon all nations to do their utmost, so that peaceful resolution of disputes prevails, in full respect for International Law by all.
Elaborating on the Greek candidacy for the UN’s Security Council 2025/26, Minister Gerapetritis pointed out that: “As a founding member of the United Nations, Greece’s foreign policy has always been defined by its commitment to International Law. If elected, our term will be guided by three core values that are universally expressed in Greek language: Diplomacy, Dialogue, Democracy. He continued by highlighting that “while Diplomacy and Dialogue remain the only path to peaceful resolution of disputes, only Democracy ensures lasting stability and security”. “Ukrainians today fight for their right to live in a democratic society. And Greece and the European Union Stand with them”.
