Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 78th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Marking the 78th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the following statement: “On this day, October 24, 1945, the United Nations, the guardian of international peace and security, was founded. Greece, one of the founding member states of the UN, supports the Organization’s role in promoting international peace through diplomacy and deliberation.
It consistently pursues a principled foreign policy, prioritizing respect for international law and the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter. At this critical juncture, when peace is under threat, Greece remains committed to the conviction that the United Nations must serve its universal purpose of peaceful resolution of disputes and full respect for international law and human rights”.
In celebration of this landmark anniversary, on October 24, the Region of Attica held a special event in its capital city of Athens. In a symbolic gesture, the event began with the hoisting of the Greek and UN flags at the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis, followed by wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Hellenic Parliament.
