Greece addresses the Informal Plenary Meeting of the UNGA on the existential threats emanating from sea-level rise as a result of the climate crisis, in New York.
Addressing the works of the Meeting, the Head of the Hellenic Republic Mission to the UN in New York, Ambassador Evaggelos Sekeris stressed that “sea-level rise could have a tremendous impact upon the nations’ peace and security. Greece is resolute in pursuing the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNICLOS), which sets out the legal framework for all activities in the oceans and seas.
To this end, climate security concerns must be integrated into a concise early-warning and conflict-prevention system. Greece has set maritime security as one of its fundamental priorities within the context of its candidacy for the UN Security Council for the term 2025/26. Safe seas and oceans are fundamental for blue growth, energy security, supply operations, and the achievement of sustainable development, conditions which could be very easily jeopardized by the global menace of sea-level rise.
