An important vote of confidence for Greece as the country secures membership in the UN IMO Council for 2024/25
Greece has secured its position as a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2024-2025 biennium in category A, following the IMO Assembly in London.
A shipping powerhouse and a leading stakeholder defining the industry’s future, Greece remains committed to the role of the IMO as a global legislator for safe, environmentally friendly and efficient shipping. As a candidate member- state for the UN Security Council for the years 2025/26, Greece attaches great importance to maritime security and commits to work with IMO to ensure the benefit of shipping and seafarers. The country also pledges its support for the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy, an important priority of which is the de-carbonisation of shipping.
The newly elected council for 2024/25 also includes China, Italy, Japan, Liberia, Norway, Panama, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
