Dubbed as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity” to enhance cooperation on critical challenges, the “Summit of the Future- Multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow” is scheduled to be hosted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 22-23 September 2024 and aspires to lead to the adoption of an action-orientated “Pact for the Future”. The Summit will attempt to reaffirm existing commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Charter, while moving towards a reinvigorated system in forging global consensus.
To this end, Member-States are invited to consider ways to contribute to this vision and accelerate progress towards the achievement of the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’. Since the beginning of the vision’s inception, Greece has assumed an energetic role in contributing to ‘Our Common Agenda,’ a roadmap leading to the implementation of the SDGs.
Three months following the September 2023 Ministerial Meeting in New York, where Greece submitted its own proposals for joint action, this December, and in light of the Hellenic Republic’s candidacy for the UN’s Security Council in 2025/26, Greece addressed two of the five main thematic discussions on the way to the 2024 Summit.
In particular, on December 5, Greece addressed the discussion on ‘International Peace and Security’ and on December 6, the Hellenic Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York contributed to the dialogue on ‘Transforming Global Governance’. Addressing a high-level event organized by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on the same day, Greece pledged its financial contribution in support of the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for 2024.
