On 24 October, the Security Council held its annual open debate on ‘Women, Peace and Security’ (WPS), which this year is titled “Women Building Peace in a Changing Environment”. The Executive Director of UN Women, United Nations’ entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, Ms Sima Bahous briefed the Security Council on the Secretary General’s 2024 report on WPS.

Addressing the Debate, the Greek Mission highlighted the importance of gender-equal participation in decision-making and peace-building, the protection from conflict-related sexual violence, the promotion of the right to bodily control, as well as the encouragement of women coming from grassroots groups and human rights defenders to engage more actively.

The Hellenic Republic has set the WPS Agenda at the very top of its priorities for its two-year term at the Security Council (2025/26). This prioritization stems from our belief as a founding UN member state that the equal representation of women in decision-making, including in peace processes, remains a decisive factor of our collective efforts to reach sustainable peace and development.
