UNSC High-Level Debate on Maritime Security organized by Panama Presidency

At today’s UNSC High-Level Open Debate on Maritime Security, chaired by the President of Panama H.E. José Raúl Mulino, CdA of Greece, Mr. Ioannis Stamatekos:

➡️ stressed that traditional and emerging maritime threats, such as hybrid threats and attacks on critical maritime infrastructure, violate freedom of navigation, disrupt global supply chains, jeopardize food and energy security, and endanger the lives of seafarers  

➡️ underlined the importance of robust international cooperation and the coordination of national, regional, and multilateral efforts, including active partnerships involving the private sector  

➡️ reiterated that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) remains the cornerstone of international maritime governance providing the comprehensive framework for addressing both traditional and emerging threats  

➡️ expressed support for a strengthened role for the United Nations in addressing maritime security challenges.
