UNSC briefing on the situation in the Middle East (Syria – political and humanitarian)

This morning the Security Council convened to discuss the situation in Syria. DPR of Greece Mr. Ioannis Stamatekos:

➡️ stressed that Syria’s volatile security landscape, following the horrific violence in Suwaida and the recent attack on the Mar Elias Orthodox Church in Damascus, requires urgent action. Transitional justice and accountability for all crimes committed will be crucial in this regard
➡️ welcomed the announcement of indirect parliamentary elections as an important step towards an essential inclusive political transition under SC Resolution 2254 and stressed the need to ensure participation of all groups of Syrian society
➡️ reaffirmed, following yesterday’s constructive meeting of the Greek Foreign Minister with his Syrian counterpart in Athens, Greece’s commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria
➡️ highlighted the need to reinforce the international humanitarian response and expressed full solidarity with the Syrian people as they face the impact of climate change with wildfires and severe drought.
