At the UN Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East (Syria), the Permanent Representative of Greece:
↪ Underlined that the recent visit of the UN Security Council to Syria, for the first time since its founding in 1945, sent a strong signal of support to the country’s reintegration into the international community and of UN’s commitment in this regard.
↪ Expressed support for the invaluable role of the UN in the next steps and for the relocation of the Special’s Envoy Office to Damascus.
↪ Highlighted that turning the page in the country requires the full protection and inclusion of all its society components, accountability and respect of Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
↪ Stressed that extremism cannot stain the path to peace and security and should be addressed accordingly.
↪ Recognized the need for expedited international support, as Syria embarks on the initial phases of post-civil war reconstruction.
