At today’s UNSC Briefing on Non-Proliferation (Iran – 1737 Committee), the Permanent Representative of Greece:
↪️ Reiterated Greece’s concern over the escalation in the Middle East and called on all parties to show maximum restraint and urgently pursue de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy.
↪️ Stressed that freedom of navigation must be safeguarded, including the right of transit passage as reflected in UNCLOS.
↪️ Highlighted that Iran’s nuclear program remains a major source of concern, while calling on Iran to seize the present opportunity and negotiate meaningfully and constructively.
↪️ Repeated that the reinstatement of the 1737 Committee was both valid and legitimate and that, in the absence of a negotiated solution, is an essential mechanism for ensuring compliance with UN sanctions.
