UN Security Council High Level Open Debate on the Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Maritime Domain

At today’s UNSC High Level Open Debate on the Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Maritime Domain, the Permanent Representative of Greece:

↪ Stressed that Greece, as a leading maritime nation and an elected member state of UNSC, is profoundly committed to upholding maritime security, and ensuring that international maritime routes remain open, secure and resilient, under all circumstances.

↪ Underlined that when maritime security is undermined, international peace and security are directly affected.

↪ Noted that global shipping encounters evolving threats, more sophisticated than ever, underscoring the fundamental importance of securing open, safe and unimpeded passage.

↪ Highlighted that freedom of navigation is a longstanding principle of international law, as reflected in UNCLOS.

↪ Voiced the importance of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in strengthening international coordination, information-sharing and support to member states in addressing maritime security threats.
