At this morning’s UN Security Council Arria Formula meeting organized by Sierra Leone and cosponsored by Algeria, Somalia and Guyana on ‘Small Arms Control and Weapons Management in UN Sanctions Regimes’, the Permanent Representative of Greece, Ambassador Sekeris:
➡ Underscored Greece’s support to the UN Programme of Action as the universal framework to address the threat posed by illicit small arms and light weapons (SALW), calling for its full and effective implementation at national, regional and global levels
➡ called the Council to ensure the implementation of its own Resolutions that establish sanction regimes, primarily through ensuring accountability for violators and effective monitoring and reporting mechanisms
➡ highlighted the extensive framework of the EU on arms transfers, the work of South-Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) and the implementation of the Roadmap for a sustainable solution to arms control in the Western Balkans
➡ stressed that the role of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROSLI) can be crucial in ensuring that disarmament and weapons management accompany sanctions relief or conflict resolution efforts
