At today’s UN Security Council Arria formula meeting on “Safe Seas, Shared Security: Protecting Freedom of Navigation in an Evolving Security Environment”, the Permanent Representative of Greece highlighted the importance of:
↪ Stressed that the deteriorating security environment and escalation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandeb threatens civilians and civilian infrastructure.
↪ Underscored that freedom of navigation and the right to safe, open and unimpeded passage are fundamental international law principles, essential to international peace and security and global trade.
↪ Reiterated that UNCLOS sets out the universal and unified legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and seas must be carried out.
↪ Reaffirmed that Greece, as a leading maritime nation, has an abiding stake in the security of international shipping, freedom of navigation, and safe and unimpeded passage of commercial vessels.
