Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East (Syria)

At today’s UNSC meeting, the Permanent Representative of Greece Ambassador Sekeris

➡ informed the UNSC that, during his recent visit to Damascus, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Gerapetritis conveyed that Greece wants to open a new chapter in Greek-Syrian long-standing ties and contribute to the country’s stability and prosperity

➡ stressed that only an inclusive political transition will be viable in Syria, in the spirit of UNSC Resolution 2254

➡ underscored that the humanitarian and security situation must be urgently addressed

➡ stressed that the Syrian refugees’ safe and voluntary return to Syria must remain on our collective horizon

➡ called upon all parties to respect Syria’s unity, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity
