The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 10, welcoming leaders from across the world to deliberate on a series of pressing issues for humanity. This year’s High-Level Week (September 23-27) marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On September 21, the Permanent Missions of Portugal, Greece and United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), organized a special joint side event titled Sustainability of Outer Space and the Pact for the Future.
The side event is part of the United Nations Action Days leading up to the Summit of the Future, an inter-governmentally negotiated action plan, soon to be adopted by the leaders of the world during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
Addressing the event, key note speakers looked into the future and suggested solutions and basic guidelines for sustainable space activities, stressing the importance of outer space as a shared resource.
