Fostering cooperation between governments and collaboration with international bodies, Greece participated in the 52nd Meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum, held in the Cook Islands, on November 6 to 10, 2023. The event was attended by the Ambassador of Greece in Australia, George Papacostas.
During the Forum’s works, the Greek Ambassador had the opportunity to inform his counterparts about the emphasis Greece places on the increasingly worrying impact of climate change and the challenges it poses on the security of eco-vulnerable countries. As a country composed of many islands, with a coastline consisting one of the longest worldwide, Greece has set protection against climate change, as one of its six priorities within the framework of its candidacy for the UN’s Security Council.
Within this context, Greece availed itself of the opportunity to inform the Forum’s member-states and participants about Greece’s preparations regarding the upcoming 9th “Our Ocean Conference” to be held in Athens, in April 2024. Held for the first time in 2014, “Our Ocean Conference” is an initiative by the US former Secretary of State and current Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. “Our Ocean Greece 2024” seeks to highlight important aspects for the sustainable management and conservation of the seas and oceans, as well as their resources, all in line with achieving SDG14.
