Today, a Host Country Agreement between Greece and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) was signed in Athens, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. George Gerapetritis and IOM Director General, Ms Amy Pope. The purpose of the Agreement is to further facilitate the operation of the Organization’s Office in Athens and its activitity in Thessaloniki, Patra, Ioannina and Heraklio.

Established in 1951, in the aftermath of the Second World War, IOM is now the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration, with presence in over one hundred countries. Together with the civil society, both governments and the Organization seek to harness the full potential of human mobility for development and prosperity. As a founding member of the Organization, Greece shares with the IOM a long history of cooperation. Through its Athens chapter operating since 1952, IOM and the Hellenic Authorities work together on the mission to help and support migrants.
