Democracy, “δημοκρατία” in Greek. It literally means the power of the people. Born in ancient Athens, democracy is also based on dialogue, the open exchange of arguments in the “αγορά”, there are no silent democracies.
On International Democracy Day, September 15, we honor the enduring values of democracy, freedom, justice and equality. As an elected member of the UNSC for 2025/26, Greece is dedicated to promoting these principles globally, advancing peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
This year’s theme for the International Day of Democracy is focused on the importance of Artificial Intelligence as a tool for good governance.
