Did you know? Every 10 minutes a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a special event upon initiative of the Dominican Republic was organized on November 25 at the UN Headquarters in New York, to advocate for women’s rights. Under the theme “No excuse”, the event started with a statement delivered by the President of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang, who highlighted that one third of women fall victims of incidents of domestic and work-related violence. Mr. Yang called for international and regional cooperation in order to strengthen the existing legal and policy frameworks that tackle gender-based violence. Deputy UN Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, focused mostly on the repercussions women and girls face during armed conflicts while she also criticized the repetitive exclusion of women from high-ranking government positions.

Greece participated in the event highlighting its commitment to promote the “Women, Peace & Security Agenda” during its tenure on the UN Security Council during the years 2025/26. In fact, Greece considers the matter of utmost importance and has therefore set the promotion of this agenda as one of its six main priorities. Moreover, Greece vows to give its fight to turn around the global trend, either through its active participation in the United Nations or by taking concrete legislative steps to shield women’s rights domestically.
