Ahead of Greece’s tenure on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for the biennium 2025/26, the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs prepares its framework of synergies with United Nations Security Council Permanent Member States with a purpose to increase its engagement, promote its overarching priorities and maximize its term’s impact.

On November 26 and 27 political consultations between Greece and the United Kingdom were held in Athens, ahead of Greece’s tenure on the UNSC. The Greek delegation was headed by the Director General for International Organizations of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maria Theofili, while the British delegation was headed by UN & Multilateral Department Chief of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Ambassador Tom Woodroffe.

The discussions addressed the key global challenges which currently top the agenda of the UN Security Council, while at the same time delved into issues of particular interest for both countries, such as the the negative effects of climate change on international peace and security, the necessity to promote the “Children and Armed Conflicts” Agenda, together with the “Women Peace and Security” Agenda and of course, maritime security and the freedom of safe navigation. Regional stability was also taken into appropriate consideration, particularly through the prism of the potential spillover effects the regional crises can generate.
