Greece for UN Security Council- Here’s why

May 13, 2024 | News and Media

The Permanent Mission of the Hellenic Republic to the United Nations participated in the 2024 UN Security Council Election Briefing with UN Security Council Candidates for non-contested seats. The participants included the Permanent Missions of Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia.

The Briefing was convened upon initiative of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), a global nonprofit organization representing and coordinating more than one hundred national United Nations Associations. The event provided an opportunity for each candidate member state to elaborate on its priorities and emphasize the merits of the diplomatic toolkit it plans to utilize.

Greece advocated in favor of building ‘synergies’, a Greek word which presupposes consensus and paves the way for common action through a ‘hands-on’ approach.

Moreover, the Greek Mission explained the reasons why it is important for the world to prioritize respect for the Rule of Law, environmental protection, the peaceful settlement of disputes and the promotion of the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda.
