On December 5th, the United Nations Secretary-General presented the 2024 report on the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM). The report outlined progress, challenges and recommendations to advance GCM commitments and improve migration governance.
The Global Compact is the first inter-governmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. It is a non-binding document that respects states’ sovereign right to determine who enters and stays in their territory.
Addressing the informal plenary, Greece reiterated its support for the GCM which was adopted in 2018. The Greek Mission highlighted some of the country’s best practices in enhancing regular routes of migration, elaborated on effective solutions in combatting the smuggling of migrants and human trafficking, while suggested ways to protect the migrants’ rights -and especially those belonging to vulnerable societal groups- by facilitating their integration into society.
