Do you know what was the famous Olympic Truce? How was respect and tolerance embodied during ancient times? What can we learn today from cherishing millennia-old traditions?
Find out by visiting the Greek Mission’s exhibition “The Olympic Ideal and the Truce- 2,800 years of history” at the UN Headquarters in New York. The exhibition kicked off with festive atmosphere on October 23, welcoming all our friends and partners within the United Nations, with the support of the French and American UN Missions, representing the countries which hosted (2024) and will host the Olympic Games in 2028.
Through the prism of archaeology and history, from antiquity to modern times, this exhibition aspires to illustrate the timeless and ever-relevant nature of the Olympic values. Olympism is a philosophy of life, creating an equilibrium for the body, mind and soul. Core values such as the Olympic Truce were also fundamental in building and nourishing peace, not only for our inner self but also among communities. Respect, tolerance, perseverance and solidarity are only a few of the principles of Olympism which were exalted during the exhibition, celebrating a legacy of 2,800 years.
The exhibition runs through November 1 and the Greek Mission invites everyone to experience an inspiring and thought-provoking moment for diplomats and citizens of the world!

The “Olympic Truce”, or “Ekecheiria”, was established in Ancient Greece in the 9th century BC through the signing of a treaty among three kings to allow safe participation in the ancient Olympic Games for all athletes and spectators from three Greek city-states, which were otherwise almost constantly engaged in conflict with each other.
