UN Security Council meeting on reasserting international legal protections for children in armed conflict: strengthening the protection of education and the prevention of grave violations

At today’s UN Security Council meeting on CAAC, the Permanent Representative of Greece:

↪️ Expressed strong support for the Children And Armed Conflict mandate as a core pillar of UN peace and security work, and commended the Special Representative of the Secretary General and UNICEF for their continued efforts.

↪️ Strongly condemned all grave violations against children in armed conflict, and reiterated the call on all parties to comply with their obligations under International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law.

↪️ Urged all parties to take concrete measures to protect education from attacks, refrain from the military use of schools, and ensure children’s continued access to safe learning.

↪️ Stressed that ending impunity is essential — perpetrators of grave violations must be held accountable.

↪️ Underlined that digital technologies have fundamentally altered the landscape of grave violations against children, and welcomed the Secretary-General’s call on tech and social media companies to prevent their platforms from being used for the recruitment and exploitation of children.
