On April 1 and 2, Greece and Slovakia held consultations, within the context of Slovakia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat, on the United Nations Security Council, for the 2028–2029 term. Prior to the consultations, the Slovak delegation met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexandra Papadopoulou who extended a warm welcome, setting the stage for a fruitful collaboration. The consultations which followed were led by the Head of Task Force for the UNSC, Ambassador Maria Theofili, representing the Greek side and the Director General for International Organizations and Human Rights of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Ambassador Michal Komada, representing Slovakia.

As Greece is currently in the second year of its biennial term on the UN Security Council, the Greek delegation elaborated on the benefits which small nations, in particular, can derive from active participation in institutions of such caliber. By providing a meaningful transfer of institutional knowledge, the Greek side highlighted the added value a country can obtain from enhancing its visibility, building upon synergies with diverse partners, and broadening its perspective on global developments. Both sides explored the challenges such a delicate exercise of balance can entail, but it was established that there is significant potential when the countries hone their powers through a responsible, vigilant and well-argued tenure.
