Arria-formula meeting on ‘Maritime Safety and Security: Protection of seafarers’

Greece along with India and the Philippines co-organized a UNSC Arria-formula meeting on ‘Maritime Safety and Security: Protection of seafarers’. The meeting was co-sponsored by Denmark, Panama, Japan and Romania. The Secretary-General of the IMO delivered welcoming remarks while the panel briefers included experts on the field from Greece, the Philippines and India.

The meeting underscored that:  

➡️ seafarers remain essential to international maritime transport and the continuous operation of global trade  

➡️ seafarers play a key role in supporting international shipping and in maintaining global supply chains  

➡️ it is important to raise awareness and to create appropriate conditions, which promote women’s empowerment and foster the elimination of discrimination  

➡️ seafarers are facing various risks, including those arising from the  pandemic, conflict and terrorist activities, and abandonment  

➡️ seafarers’ well-being, training and safety are indispensable to maritime security and global prosperity.
