From 11 to 14 November 2025, Greece hosted a training workshop on non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction to non – state actors, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004).

The workshop, which was attended by 24 participants coming from 8 countries, covered a number of topics relevant to the implementation by UN member states of their obligations stemming from UNSCR 1540; participants also took part in a training exercise, which simulated the boarding and inspection of a ship, in search of radioactive materials. Throughout the training, particular emphasis was laid on the aspect of maritime security, which represents one of Greece’s main priorities during its current tenure at the Security Council.

The training offered capacity building opportunities to countries having requested assistance from the UN, in order to effectively deal with cases of WMD trafficking at sea by non-state actors.

Greece’s valuable contribution in this regard, as well as the significant role of this initiative, was recognized by all participants, including by the United Nations Office for Disarmament, the representative of which Mr. Christopher King delivered a pre-recorded address.
