UN Security Council briefing on the Protection of civilians in armed conflict (SCR 2730)

At today’s UNSC briefing on the Protection of Civilians (SCR 2730), the Permanent Representative of Greece, Ambassador Sekeris:

➡ underlined that the protection of civilians in armed conflict remains a cornerstone of the UN Security Council agenda, as well as a core obligation of the international community under International Humanitarian Law

➡ expressed distress that the death toll of humanitarian workers in 2024 has become the deadliest on record

➡ emphasized the importance of UN Security Council Resolution 2730 for the protection of humanitarian, UN and associated personnel (both national and locally recruited), as well as their premises and assets

➡ strongly reaffirmed the need for concerted efforts to safeguard IHL compliance, adopt a more comprehensive approach to the protection of civilians in armed conflict and ensure accountability for perpetrators of harm
