On December 12 and ahead of a meeting of the UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan), Greece joined current and incoming Security Council Signatories of the Statement of Shared Commitments for the Principles of Women, Peace and Security in a media stakeout addressing the current situation of women in Afghanistan. The statement called on the Taliban regime to respect women’s rights and eliminate gender-based discrimination in accordance with international law. It also emphasized the importance of adhering to successive UN resolutions concerning Afghanistan, particularly Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.
Women’s empowerment and of course gender-equality constitute one of the main priorities of Greece, especially within the framework of its tenure at the Security Council for the biennium 2025/26. The Greek Mission has long expressed its deep concern about the deteriorating situation of women’s rights in Afghanistan amidst extreme oppression under the Taliban rule and has engaged in many efforts to provide a platform for Afghan women’s rights activists.
