Ways to strengthen the UN through the Rule of Law- A side event

The Permanent Mission of the Hellenic Republic to the United Nations hosted a side event on “The feasible reforms to strengthen the UN on behalf of the Rule of Law”. The event was co-sponsored by another 17 member-states and former Prime Minister of Italy and President emeritus of the Italian Constitutional Court, Giuliano Amato was the keynote speaker. The distinguished panel also included the Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, while remarks were also delivered by the Permanent Missions of Greece and Cyprus.

The event was held by the Global Rule of Law Commission, established in 2019 by the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), an Athens-based international organization dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge in the area of Public Law and Governance worldwide. Since 2007, EPLO has supported more than 200 educational, research, training, institution building and other activities and has aided democratic institutions in more than 70 countries. It cooperates with other institutions, organizations and bodies in particular within the United Nations system.

Staring January 2025, Greece will participate as a full non-permanent member on the United Nations Security Council. Respect, enhancement and effective implementation of the Rule of Law will become the cornerstone of the country’s tenure on the UNSC. In this context, promoting rules-based multilateralism will be our compass, and therefore suggesting ways of reforming the UN for the advancement of the Rule of Law, cannot be but of utmost importance for the Hellenic tenure.
