United Nations Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict, Virginia Gamba was on an official visit to Greece (November 11 and 12).
While in Athens, Ms Gamba held a series of meetings with state officials. The Special Representative was welcomed by Foreign Minister, George Gerapetritis, as well as Migration & Asylum Deputy Minister, Sofia Voultepsi. Ms Gamba met also with Hellenic Parliament Defense & Foreign Affairs Vice Chair, Dimitris Keridis and participated in a working luncheon hosted by the Foreign Ministry Director General for International Organisations, Ambassador Maria Theofili.
The Children and Armed Conflict Agenda (CAAC) is of paramount importance for Greece, especially within the framework of its tenure on the United Nations Security Council for the years 2025/26. The Hellenic Republic will soon assume the chairmanship of the Security Council Working Group on Children & Armed Conflict, while it actively supports the CAAC Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism, which is important for the data it collects and the input it provides to the Working Group.
The Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations was also the cohost of a series of side events on this sensitive issue. We touched upon the critical state of children’s rights in migration contexts due to war situations, as well as children’s rights in receiving humanitarian aid in conflict zones. Greece will continue to promote the GAAC Agenda by shielding children’s rights and by reiterating that before anything else, children reserve the right to be treated as children.
