The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 10, welcoming leaders from across the world to deliberate on a series of pressing issues for humanity. This year’s High-Level Week (September 23-27) marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

On June 6, the UN General Assembly elected Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia to serve as non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2025.

Meeting on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York on September 25, the Prime Minister of Greece and the President of Panama reaffirmed their strong will to cooperate within the UN Security Council on a series of pressing matters that require international attention and global solutions.

In the same spirit, Foreign Ministers of Greece and Panama, George Gerapetritis and Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez also met in the margins of the 79th UNGA, where they agreed to join forces in initiatives pertaining to the Security Council’s Agenda, with an emphasis on maritime affairs within the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). As two nations with a long and thriving shipping culture and industry, the two Ministers agreed upon the need to create a new impetus in their synergy and that the recent opening of the Embassy of Greece in Panama opens a new chapter in bilateral cooperation and further beyond.
