79th UN General Assembly: PM on the situation in the Middle East

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 10, welcoming leaders from across the world to deliberate on a series of pressing issues for humanity. This year’s High-Level Week (September 23-27) marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

On September 23, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the Crown Prince of Kuwait HH Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah. Discussions focused on developments in the Middle East and the Red Sea, with the Greek Premier highlighting the importance of free navigation in the region. Moreover, the Premier held discussions with HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, as well as the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia Al Sudani.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met also with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. During the meeting, they discussed international and regional developments, with a focus on the situation in the Middle East.

Finally, Prime Minister Mitsotakis held talks with representatives of American Jewish organisations. During the meeting, they discussed international and regional developments, with emphasis on the war in Ukraine and the latest developments in the Middle East. The Prime Minister reiterated Greece’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence, as well as the need to reach an immediate ceasefire agreement for the release of hostages and the provision of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

On September 25, the Premier met with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. During their meeting, Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his concern about the intensifying escalation that risks destabilizing the wider region and stressed the need to resume the political process that will lead to a two-state solution. He also reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

On September 26, the Prime Minister met with his Lebanese counterpart, Najib Mikati to discuss latest developments in Lebanon. During their talks, Mitsotakis expressed his support towards the proposal for an immediate 21-day ceasefire. He also underlined underlined the need for de-escalation in order to avoid the war spreading to the whole region, endangering regional stability.
