The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 10, welcoming leaders from across the world to deliberate on a series of pressing issues for humanity. This year’s High-Level Week (September 23-27) marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The United Nations Summit of the Future, a unique opportunity to strengthen cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance, is taking place in tandem. The initiatives outlined in the Summit’s Pact for the Future – an inter-governmentally negotiated action plan- aim at reaffirming the fundamental principles, revitalizing multilateralism and strengthening the implementation of existing commitments.

For Greece, the ‘Pact for the Future’ is of paramount importance. As a newly elected member of the Security Council for the next two years, the Hellenic Republic participates actively in this difficult negotiation and aspires to bring about a meaningful contribution.

Addressing the Summit, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed: “Our Pact for the Future, as a point of global consensus, is only a first step. But it is a necessary first step. It is, after all, a political declaration to act. And political will is a necessary driver for action, at the national level and, collectively, at the global level.”
