On August 21, the Security Council held an open debate on peacebuilding and sustainable peace. In particular, the discussion addressed global, regional and national aspects of conflict prevention. The Greek mission participated in the discussion highlighting the importance of tools within the New Agenda such as institution building and the ‘humanitarian -development – peace’ nexus. It is an unquestionable truth that strong institutions provide the means to guarantee social justice, protect human rights and safeguard state cohesion. These are factors which prevent the occurrence of ‘failed state’ phenomena and contribute to long-standing peace.
Touching upon the global and regional aspect of conflict prevention, the Greek Ambassador stressed that as an incoming elected member of the Security Council, Greece will capitalize on synergies and referred to the example of the ‘African Union’s Agenda 2063’, which serves as a useful blueprint to this endeavor.
At the same time, the Greek mission expressed its support towards the ‘Peacebuilding Commission’ (PBC), the United Nations intergovernmental advisory body of both the General Assembly and the Security Council, which supports peace efforts in conflict affected countries.
