The 77th World Health Assembly under the World Health Organisation (WHO), is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 27 May – 1 June. The theme of this year’s annual event is “All for Health, Health for All”. Greece addressed the Assembly on May 28 and has actively engaged in discussions on universal health coverage, at the same time being in favor of finalizing the World Health Organization Pandemic Agreement for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.
At a national level, Greece places particular emphasis on innovative economic thinking to improve its national healthcare system through the adoption of cost-effective ‘one health’ policies, meaning an approach in which multiple sectors communicate and work together to achieve better outcomes.
In this context, digital transition is considered of crucial importance for the success of the endeavor, especially in the primary health care system. One good example is the home services provided to vulnerable populations through mobile units, thus reinforcing prevention. The recently applied program set out for preliminary breast cancer screening is estimated to have saved the life of 20,000 women over the past two years alone. Furthermore, another considerable advantage of the program is that valuable resources have now been saved to be used for other purposes within the Hellenic health care system.
